Foreign Grand Tours Starts : My ideas
In recent years we saw many starts of the grand tours (France, Italy, Spain). We've been to all parts of Europe except the Far East. In this blog post I'm writing down some ideas that hopefully will be used by the organisers of grand tours ;)
Zagreb - Croatia
We've already seen beautiful landscapes during the Tour of Croatia. Wouldn't it be nice to see it combined with the beautiful landscapes of Italy and Slovenia? The national tours of Croatia & Slovenia showed already that many different kind of parcours are possible. It would be nice if they could share their beauty with a bigger audience.
San Sebastian - Spain
The Basque country loves cycling. It's not one of the biggest regions in Europe but it delivered one of the biggest amount of strong riders during the past decades. Wouldn't it be nice to bring the Tour dde France to the cycling passionated city? It's definitly worth a try.
Bruges - Belgium
Another cycling loving country is Belgium. Brussels and Liège already hosted succesfull starts of grand tours. Why wouldn't it be possible in the for many people, most beautiful city of Belgium called Bruges? The city is also close of the hills of Tour of Flanders (it hosted the start of this race for many years) and the cobblestones of Roubaix, what gives many opportunities for classic riders.
Warsaw - Poland
Budapest will host the start of the Giro d'Italia, and also the Czech city of Prague is wanting to do the same. Why wouldn't a grand tour start in Poland be possible? The country is already hosting succesfully the Tour de Pologne for many decades. The country has all kinds of terrains and many historical cities. When can we expect a grand tour for the first time on Polish soil?
Bordeaux - France
Bordeaux is the ideal foreing start city for la Vuelta. It's close to Spain, it's a beautiful and historical city and it produdes high quality wines for the podium ceremony ;) After a few stages the riders could already enter the Pyrenees what reduces the chances on nervous flat stages in the first weeks.
